LOOGOOTEE, Ind. — U.S. Highway 231 will be temporarily closed between Loogootee and Crane starting August 11 for a week-long chip and seal project, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced Monday. The closure is scheduled to last for about one week, weather permitting.
The maintenance work is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve road surfaces and enhance safety for motorists. During the closure, drivers are advised to plan alternate routes to avoid congestion and delays. A designated detour will reroute traffic from U.S. 231 to Interstate 69 and then onto U.S. 50. Local residents and travelers will still have access to the highway via flagger-controlled sites.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain alert for road workers and equipment in the area. The department emphasized that the schedule could be affected by weather conditions and advised drivers to check for updates before traveling.
This project marks the latest phase in the state’s infrastructure improvement initiatives aimed at maintaining and extending the lifespan of Indiana’s roadways. Officials stated that the work is essential for ensuring safe and reliable transportation routes for years to come.
Residents and travelers are urged to plan accordingly and stay informed through local news outlets and the Indiana Department of Transportation’s official channels for any changes to the schedule.
