The front of the Loogootee Post Office remains temporarily closed as staff work to transfer mail back to the facility, according to an official company notification. The closure, which began after a tornado struck Loogootee on March 15, causing a major disruption until the store reopened in late May.
Usual operations have resumed such as the Post Office reopening the store to allow customers to get mail from their assigned mailbox, but the store is expected to resolve some minor issues soon.
Customers are advised that the front window remains closed, preventing services such as selling stamps and applying postage. The Post Office recommends nearby alternatives in Shoals and Montgomery for those needing postal services like mailing, weighing items, or postage application.
Despite the closure, the facility can still accept prepaid packages that already have shipping labels. For customers requiring assistance with certified letters, signature-required mail, or oversized package pickups, a clerk is available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
To receive assistance, customers are instructed to knock on the brown “Private” door located to the right of the building entrance. The Post Office has emphasized that normal business operations are expected to resume shortly.
Mail transfer issues like these can occur due to logistical delays or other operational challenges, but postal officials assure the public that they are working diligently to restore full service. Customers are encouraged to plan accordingly and utilize alternative locations if urgent mailing needs arise.
The Post Office has not specified the exact duration of the closure but promises updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Local residents are urged to stay informed through official announcements and to contact the Post Office directly with any urgent questions.
Otherwise, the USPS Post Office remains open, and customers can continue to access their mail and other postage inside of their assigned mailboxes inside the Post Office.
