WASHINGTON, Indiana — In a highly contested moment for such a young kid, to put the Vikings on his back, the score was tight, in the final seconds of the Washington High School IHSAA Class 1A Regionals Championship took an intense turn towards the end, ultimately coming down to free throws, as Bar Reeve’s #22 Carson Yoder successfully sank two crucial shots in the final moments.
These free throws secured the victory for the Vikings, allowing them to claim the school’s tenth Regional Championship title, their first since the 2023-24 season. Throughout the game, West Washington kept the score close, continually challenging Barr Reeve’s efforts. This resilience was impressive, especially considering Barr Reeve had nearly dominated the Loogootee Sectionals tournament with fewer mistakes and greater effort before the regional showdown at the Hatchet House.
The Senators started with notable energy, opening the first half with a three-pointer that put them ahead 3-0. Barr Reeve fought hard for every opportunity, demonstrating resilience and determination, in contrast to their more fluent play during the Loogootee Sectional.
At halftime, the scoreboard read Barr Reeve 21, West Washington 22. It was the first time since before the sectional that Barr Reeve trailed at halftime, adding suspense. The Vikings’ defense continued to challenge the Senators, preventing easy shots and strong plays at every turn.
In the third and fourth quarters, every basket and every touch of the ball was contested fiercely. West Washington’s radio announcer noted how Barr Reeve’s defense played physically, disrupting the Senators’ rhythm. Both teams matched each other blow for blow, with intense defense on display.
The Vikings’ lead widened at one point, reaching 51-42 with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. That margin, which seemed certain to secure a victory, evaporated as West Washington hit three consecutive three-pointers, turning a 53-45 deficit into a close 53-50 game near the end.
The game’s conclusion showcased the teams’ defensive and offensive efforts, with both sides displaying remarkable intensity and resolve. Fans and players alike will remember this dramatic finish, a testament to the competitive spirit that defined the regional showdown.
West Washington will finish their season 18-7, with a 3-2 Conference Record, finishing third in the Patoka Lake Conference standings.
