LOOGOOTEE, Ind. — In an electric, five-set postseason classic at Jack Butcher Arena on Saturday afternoon, the Shoals Jug Rox cemented their place in school lore, outlasting archrival Loogootee 3-2 to advance to the Class 1A Sectional 62 Championship match.
Shoals prevailed in a grueling, back-and-forth marathon (25-22, 21-25, 29-27, 14-25, 15-8), earning what fans and program followers hailed as the finest victory in Shoals volleyball history. With the monumental win, the Jug Rox punched their ticket to face the Orleans Bulldogs for the sectional title at 6 p.m. Saturday.
From the opening whistle, the Martin County rivals traded heavy blows before an energized, divided crowd. Shoals set the early tone in the opening frame, absorbing Loogootee’s frontline pressure and capitalizing in transition to take the first set 25-22. The host Lions, who entered the postseason tournament with a 19-9 record and a first-round bye, quickly regrouped in the second frame. Loogootee cleaned up its passing, established consistency at the net and countered with a 25-21 victory to knot the contest at one set apiece.
The third set produced high drama and tournament volleyball at its absolute peak. Neither team led by more than two points throughout the closing stretch, as both squads repeatedly turned away set points in tense, marathon rallies. Pushing well past the traditional 25-point threshold, Shoals showed remarkable resolve in the clutch, edging the Lions 29-27 to reclaim a 2-1 match lead.
Loogootee refused to bow out quietly on its home court. Re-energized and determined to extend the contest, the Lions dominated the fourth set from both the service line and the front row. Middle hitter Alaina Diamond delivered several impressive moments at the net, producing timely spikes and anchoring the block to spark the host crowd. Loogootee raced away to a decisive 25-14 win, leveling the match at 2-2 and pushing the semifinal showdown into a winner-take-all fifth set.
With a sectional championship berth on the line, the Jug Rox seized complete command in the tiebreaker.
While Loogootee’s offense suddenly stalled and struggled to find points in the final frame, Shoals surged out of the gate with infectious energy. The Jug Rox got critical contributions throughout their rotation, highlighted by a composed, fearless performance from their freshman talent under heavy postseason pressure. Shoals quickly jumped ahead, dictated the tempo from the service line, and suffocated the Lions’ attack down the stretch, pulling away for a runaway 15-8 set win and igniting jubilant celebrations on the floor.
Statistically, Shoals was powered by standout individual performances. Loren Bauer (#17) led the offensive charge, hammering home a team-high 19 kills while adding two blocks, two assists and an attacking percentage of .189. Journey Chastain (#13) provided vital two-way balance at the net, contributing six kills, two total blocks and a .150 hitting percentage to keep the Lions’ block off-balance throughout the afternoon.
Libero Peyton Harger (#9) anchored the defensive back row with rock-solid passing and court coverage, even finding the floor for a kill on her lone attacking opportunity of the day, finishing with a flawless 1.000 hitting percentage.
For Loogootee, Diamond’s flashes of dominance kept the Lions within striking distance, but the prolonged scoring drought in the fifth set proved insurmountable. The defeat ends the Lions’ season with a 19-10 record, bringing an abrupt end to an otherwise strong campaign for the tournament hosts.
The afternoon’s opening semifinal was just as dramatic. The Orleans Bulldogs mounted a stunning five-set comeback to eliminate Lighthouse Christian Academy 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13). After dropping the opening two sets, Orleans staged a resilient turnaround, reeling off three straight set victories to complete the reverse sweep over the Lions.
The stage is now set for an all-out battle for postseason hardware. Shoals and Orleans will meet for the Class 1A Sectional Championship at 6 p.m. Saturday inside Jack Butcher Arena, with the Jug Rox carrying momentum from a historic rivalry win into the title match.
