Shoals Sweeps Orleans to Capture First Volleyball Sectional Championship Since 1993

A lively indoor sports arena filled with spectators celebrating a volleyball match. The scoreboard shows the final score of 25 to 12, with teams gathered on the court. The audience is applauding, and the atmosphere is energetic.

LOOGOOTEE, Ind. — Thirty-three years of waiting, heartbreak, and near-misses came to an emphatic, thunderous end Saturday night inside Jack Butcher Arena as the Shoals High School volleyball team swept the Orleans Bulldogs 3-0 to capture the Class 1A Sectional 63 championship.

Shoals dismantled Orleans in straight sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-12), clinching the program’s first sectional title since 1993. The dominant sweep capped a legendary, emotional day of postseason volleyball in Martin County, cementing this roster as arguably the greatest Jug Rox team in school history.

Coming off an exhausting, emotionally draining five-set semifinal marathon against host and archrival Loogootee earlier in the afternoon, Shoals showed zero signs of weary legs when they took the floor for the 6 p.m. championship final. Instead, the Jug Rox fed off pure adrenaline and unyielding confidence, seizing total control over Orleans from the opening whistle.

Shoals wasted no time setting the tone in the opening set. Dictating the tempo with blistering service runs, crisp floor defense, and precise offensive sets, the Jug Rox overwhelmed the Bulldogs early and often. Shoals raced out to a massive lead and never looked back, storming away to a lopsided 25-11 victory to draw first blood. The Bulldogs, who had survived their own grueling five-set reverse-sweep against Lighthouse Christian Academy hours earlier, appeared stunned by Shoals’ relentless pace and struggled to penetrate the Jug Rox front-row block.

Orleans refused to fold quietly, pushing back with desperate urgency in the second frame. Cleaning up their passing and tightening their net defense, the Bulldogs traded blows with Shoals through the middle rallies. Orleans tried to gain an advantage and level the match, testing the Jug Rox with aggressive shot-making. However, Shoals repeatedly showed why they are the most complete and formidable Jug Rox squad in over three decades.

With the second set hanging in the balance late, setter Brazelea Lents delivered one of the defining moments of the championship match. Reading an open spot in the Orleans back line, Lents caught the defense flat-footed, dropping in a clutch dump kill to push the Shoals lead to 21-17. The heads-up play halted the Bulldogs’ momentum and gave the Jug Rox the breathing room they needed to close out a hard-fought 25-22 victory, pushing Orleans to the brink of elimination.

Throughout the match, the dynamic duo of Lents and Riley Bauer proved completely unstoppable. Bauer consistently found ways to successfully swing the momentum of the game, rising high above the net to hammer down thunderous spikes whenever Orleans threatened to make a push. The timing and court vision between Lents and Bauer kept the Bulldogs’ blockers guessing all evening, opening up seams and keeping the Orleans defense in perpetual scramble mode.

Any hopes Orleans harbored of mounting another storybook reverse sweep evaporated rapidly in the third set. With the taste of history within their grasp and a raucous, blue-and-white-clad crowd roaring on every touch, the Jug Rox unleashed a relentless closing surge. Shoals dictated every single phase of the set, passing flawlessly, frustrating the Bulldogs’ hitters, and converting transition points at will. Shoals built an insurmountable cushion and powered across the finish line with an emphatic 25-12 triumph, sealing the championship sweep.

When the final ball hit the hardwood, the arena erupted. Shoals players rushed center court in tears of joy, mobbing each other in a wild celebration before proudly raising the sectional championship trophy high into the rafters.

The triumph snapped a 33-year championship drought, securing Shoals’ first sectional volleyball title since 1993. The victory also put an exclamation mark on an extraordinary Saturday that saw the Jug Rox battle through eight grueling sets across two matches, taking down their fiercest county rival in the semifinals before dispatching Orleans in straight sets for the crown.
