LOOGOOTEE, Ind. — An era spanning more than half a century has officially come to a close in Martin County, as Greg Johnson, known for generations as “The Voice of the Loogootee Lions,” announced his retirement after 55 years behind the microphone.

Johnson’s tenure with Loogootee Community Schools began during his first year of teaching in 1970. Over the ensuing 55 years, his commanding voice became an indelible staple of local tradition, soundtracking athletic contests across Jack Butcher Arena, LHS junior proms, high school commencement exercises, and countless community events.

Following a major health scare during the summer, Johnson decided the time was right to step down from his public address duties. He expressed deep gratitude to Athletic Director Josh Thompson, Junior Prom sponsor Nikki Wagoner, and the numerous administrators, staff members, and community supporters who aided his work across five decades.

Rather than calling the action from the scorer’s table, Johnson plans to experience Loogootee sporting events from a perspective he rarely had the chance to enjoy throughout his career: sitting as a fan in the grandstands. In retirement, he looks forward to following the Lions and especially watching his granddaughter, Briley, compete on the court.

Praised by fans and colleagues as “the best in the business,” Johnson leaves behind an enduring legacy as one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in Loogootee school history. Community members, former students, and athletics enthusiasts have offered widespread congratulations, celebrating his lifetime of service and wishing him well as he steps into a well-earned retirement.
